Choose You

On Tuesday, May 4th, the American Cancer Society launched a new movement called Choose You to inspire women to put their health first in order to stay well and prevent cancer.  I had the opportunity to attend our launch events this week

ACS Chief Mission Delivery Officer Terry Music speaks at our Choose You launch event in Times Square

in New York City, and I really gained a lot of insight into the importance of putting our health first as women.

During our launch event in Times Square on Tuesday, our celebrity ambassador Ellen Pompeo stressed that the statistics speak for themselves.  One in three women will get cancer in her lifetime.  Sounds like such a scary statistic, but in a way it should scare us into making our health a priority.  Doing little things every day like eating right, exercising, and not smoking can literally end up saving our lives.

The cool thing about this movement is that it involves an online commitment at to reach a specific, individual health goal such as protecting your skin or quitting smoking.  Women can also ask friends and family to support them, and I think that is always a good way to make sure you are staying on track!  There are also many other cool online support tools available such as a calorie calculator, virtual dietitian, smoking cost calculator, and a desktop helper with daily health tips.

As a young single working woman, I do not always put my health first.  Our movement has inspired me to take action and choose to exercise more as my commitment.  What will you choose?
